A Mermaid captive?

A government whistleblower told the general public that they are keeping a female sea humanoid in Area 51. The creature is reported as being inteligent, and is learning human language. She is unable to breath Air, for she is being kept inside a Water Tank.
A team of scientists including biologists, psychologists, antropologists and medics is taking constant care of the subject, while learning about the mermaidic culture, their way of live, and where do they live. Some religious zealots are already gathering on the neighbouring cities claiming that mermaid is a sign of the end times.
The poor creature is also rising tensions between animal rights groups, but is it right to call her "animal" if she is a inteligent creature?
Our source Whistleblower, who, for obvious reasons, will not reveal his name, also told us that the creature expresses emotions in the same way we do, and she is looking very sad and depressed for, acording to the biologists, no apparent reason.
